Form 1A May 1968

Here’s a rare one. This is 1A taken in May 1968 and it looks like the back of the gym. Gerry O’Connor, second row down, ninth from the left, kindly sent me this.

It’s great to see Fr Murphy, the boys’ form master in the middle of the picture. It was Spud’s first year at the school after transferring from the Marist school in Winslade, Clyst St Mary, Devon, where he had been headmaster.

There are a few lads on here who came from well known St Mary’s families such as Gorman, Battison and Millward.

Notice also that some of the boys in the front row are wearing short trousers, a tradition which completely vanished in the early 1970s.

Very helpfully, Gerry also supplied all the names of the boys. Let me know if you are on here.

Bob Ward: Top right. what a reminder of our early years! Out of interest checkout Ian Hannam on Wikipidia , who would have thought it.!
As I recall “Spud” was not our form master but cannot remember who was.
Remembering nicknames, not very woke today, makes me smile.I was Baldy Wardy. Sorry not to make Rod Turners return. He named me Wardrobe for illegal blocking!

Brilliant Bob! Love that nickname. Was Roy Fisher your form master perhaps?
