By the mid 70s, St Mary’s reputation as a rugby-playing school had grown and the first team consistently punched above its weight.
But with the likes of Paddy Norton, Steve Peet, Richard D’Silva and Adrian Hewett in the side, this is no surprise.
Games Master Rod Turner built a side which had pace, skill and tenacity in abundance and the school more than held in its own against the likes of St Joseph’s Academy, Chis & Sid and Eltham College and Kent schools like Judd, Dartford, Maidstone Grammar and Rochester Maths.
Norton was the star of this team – a barrel-chested ball-player with excellent feet who could play at stand off, centre or full-back while Peet was unquestionably the finest hooker in Kent for his age and an uncompromising warrior on the pitch.
Norton and Peet would both go on to enjoy excellent careers after St Mary’s with both Askeans and Blackheath.
This year saw the start of the popular Askeans floodlit trophy which literally illuminated many memorable autumnal nights. While the school came close to winning it on a few occasions, it wasn’t until season 1985/86 when, under the captaincy of Gerry Egan, St Mary and St Joseph’s lifted the cup.
I’m pretty certain these names are all accurate but, if there’s a mistake, then please let me know:
