Saturday 1 October was a great day when several hundred St Mary’s old boys gathered at the old school on Chislehurst Road, Sidcup, for the launch of We Did Our Homework on the Bus. I had hoped to play this film at the launch but it didn’t quite come off. I then ran into some copyright issues which meant I had to change a couple of the songs.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen this, I hope you get something from it. It is dedicated to all former pupils of St Mary’s College, St Mary’s Grammar, St Joseph’s Convent and St Mary and St Joseph’s but especially Kevin Hedderman, Daniel Kelleher and my best and longest friend, Peter Varnes. May they all rest in peace.
Incidentally, it’s quite an eclectic mix of music, most of which will be immediately familiar but this is the list:
Going Back – Dusty Springfield
Mary, Mary – The Monkees
Song for my Father – Horace Silver
Mrs Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter – Tom Courtenay
Garden of Eden – Frankie Vaughan
Cathy’s Clown – The Everly Brothers
Telstar – The Tornados
End of the World – Skeeter Davis
Turn! Turn! Turn! – The Byrds
Excerpt from a Teenage Opera – Keith West
Blackberry Way – The Move
Reflections of my Life – Marmalade
Band of Gold – Freda Payne
Softly Whispering I Love You – The Congregation
Without You – Nilsson
See My Baby Jive – Wizzard
The Hustle – Van McCoy
Do Anything You Wanna Do – Eddie and the Hot Rods
Airport – The Motors
Video Killed the Radio Star – The Buggles
Golden Brown – The Stranglers
Bridge over Troubled Water – Simon and Garfunkel
That’s lovely. Hats off to you, Matt.
A brilliant selection…only “High Heel Sneakers” by Tommy Tucker could have improved it, but great nonetheless. The whole day and the long period of preparation which you and the team put into the final product are a credit to you. Buck Hennessy and I are proud to have played a small part in it. The section of the book which mentions the boys welcome to the girls was interesting, and please be assured that a warm welcome would also have awaited them had they arrived with the 1958 to 1963 intake ! Our loss sadly but a narrow escape for the girls. Well done….a massive achievement.
